In June 2022, BAE updated its plans for shipbuilding in Glasgow. The new plans involve the yard’s upgraded with a new indoor shipbuilding hall and filling in the west basin.

Previously, BAE Systems had plans for a £100m state-of-the-art’ frigate factory’ at Scotstoun on the other side of the river, but it was shelved. However, with the new investment, the yard will become one of the most modern and efficient in Europe. The work is expected to be completed by 2026 and will safeguard around 700 jobs at the Clyde shipyards.

This is good news for Glasgow as well as the Scottish economy. The shipbuilding industry is an important part of Scotland’s heritage, and this move will help to secure its future.

BAE believe that with the newly updated plans, they will be able to compete for the new Type 31e frigates, as well as other commercial work. This will also provide better working conditions for the employees and give access to modern technology that is quicker and needed to stay competitive in the market.

The shipbuilding industry is a key part of Glasgow’s economy, and this move will help to secure its future.
